I'd been to Grand Canyon National Park's south rim as a teen-ager, long before I had become enamored of photography. I have been thinking about going back with my camera for years, but always dreaded the crowds. Well, I recently made the trip and while it was crowded (I've seen worse) the views were, of course, amazing. The challenging part was that once the sun breaks the horizon the contrast of light and shadow is incredible. That's more chiaroscuro (light-and-dark contrast) than I've ever seen at one time on a landscape. The results can be pretty dramatic and great for abstract photography, which I'll share on upcoming posts.
