Mer de Glace, or "Sea of Glass" glacier, France's largest sheet of ice, can be seen here in retreat during the summer near Chamonix in eastern France close to the Swiss border. This was a tough exposure, as you can imagine, due to the sunlight reflecting off the storm clouds. It was a beautiful scene for my eyes to take in, but tough on my DSLR. Anyway, Shadows/Highlights in Photoshop came to the rescue by reducing the brightest tones to something slightly less than pure blown out white. To give you an idea, the hottest part of the cloud cover measures 253 on the RGB scale (pure white would measure 255). The glacier, one of France's biggest natural attractions, is some 7 kilometers long and 200 meters thick in places.
