When you travel through the Andes Mountains in Peru, you are struck by the abundance of small scale family farms at 9,000 to 10,000 feet altitude, especially in march, which is pretty much the start of autumn in the Southern Hemisphere. The proximity to the equator makes agriculture viable even at high altitude late into the fall season in a way that would never be possible in North America.
