Gauchos, Patagonia, Chile.
En route to Punta Arenas, almost to the southern tip of the South American continent, we ran across some gauchos, their horses and dogs on a long sheep drive across the Patagonia steppes. They were moving 30,000 sheep from one government-provided corral station to another until they get to their final destination.
These gauchos were getting a fire going for warmth and to prepare dinner – grilled lamb, of course. The guachos use sheepskin for chaps and also use sheepskin as padding on their saddles to prevent getting sores after a long day on horseback.
