Austria, the seventh country on our nearly year-long itinerary, was a great mix of mountains, lakes, music, culture and forests. Innsbruck proved to be one of the liveliest cities we visited, with people singing and dancing in the streets on weekends until the wee hours of the morning. It was in Innsbruck, at St. Jakob's Cathedral, that we heard a lead female singer with a voice of an angel mesmerize an audience. In Salzburg, we heard an unforgettable chamber music performance of a composition by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart performed in a medieval fortress overlooking Mozart's birthplace. In Hallstatt we encountered rain and mist that imbued the picturesque alpine hamlet with an unforgettable air of mystery and beauty. Further south in the alps, in Tristacher See (Lake Tristacher) we came upon enchanted forests and a hiking trail that took us up to a viewpoint of the limestone Dolomites. Austria was, in short, as scenic as it was unforgettable.
