The Painted Hills, part of the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument in Eastern Oregon, were formed over millions of years of climate change and volcanic eruptions that resulted in the banded patterns of colors on the terrain. They are a great place for photography because they lend the landscape lends itself so well to grand vistas as well as abstract details of the surreal terrain.
