Gauchos building a fire, Patagonia, Chile.
En route to Punta Arenas, almost to the southern tip of the South American continent, we ran across some gauchos, their horses and dogs on a long sheep drive across the Patagonia steppes. They were moving 30,000 sheep from one government-provided corral station to another until they get to their final destination.
These gauchos were getting a fire going for warmth and to prepare dinner – grilled lamb, of course. Note the sheepskin chaps on the gaucho to the far right. Sheepskin was also used as padding by some gauchos on their saddles to prevent getting sores after a long day on horseback.
